Symphonic Wind Ensemble

r Michael Rickman, a native of Asheville, North Carolina, was privileged to have been a pupil of the late Grace Potter Carroll, herself a former pupil of Ferruccio Busoni and Theodore Leschetitzky. He holds degrees and the Performer's Certificate from Mars Hill College and the University of North Texas, where he was pupil of Richard Cass and Jack Roberts. He studied further with Karen Shaw of Indiana University. Dr. Rickman received top honors in the Theodore Leschetitzky Interna* tional Competition, Carnegie Hall, New York. For two seasons he was resident pianist with Petit Jean Music Festival, providing the opportunity to work with pianist Dalton Baldwin. He has appeared in concert with the Audubon String Quartet. His performances are regularly heard on Florid Public Radio. Since 1983, Dr. Rickman has been Professor of Music at Stetson University, where he continues to expand his musical horizons. Grants from Stetson University enabled him to study the late works of Schubert and Beethoven with pianist Edward Kilenyi and works of 20th Century Dutch composers with Dutch pianist-composer Piet Stalhmeir. In 1990, Dr., Rickman was the recipient of the first Homer and Dolly Hand Award for Creativity and Research, given by Stetson University. In May, 1995, Dr. Rickman received the highest honor given in Stetson, the William Hugh McEniry Award for Excellence in Teaching. Dr. Rickman has enraptured audiences on three continents, having appeared in nine foreign countries, including the former Soviet Union. European critics hailed his "technical perfection and great tonal beauty, a performer with stylistic and nuance-rich acumen." A native of Chicago, Mr. Kreines came to Florida as associate conductor of the Florida Symphony Orchestra, where he served for four years. Since then he has been conductor of the Brevard Symphony, associate conductor of the Florida Orchestra, and musical director of the Brevard Opera, the Cocoa Performing Arts Center and various musical theatre productions. He has been clinician and guest conductor with over 250 orchestras, bands and choruses throughout the state, and also serves as piano accompanist for many festival ana recital appearances. In addition, Mr. Kreines has composed serveral original works for various media, and is well-known for his transcriptions and arrangements of the music of Percy Grainger. He is also the author of Musk for Concert Bcend, a selective annotated guide to band literature.
