Vergniigte Run, beliebte Seelenlust, BWV MO
Jane Christeson, alto
Bach composed this Cantata in 1726 for performance on July 28. In his time (and, indeed, today) the Choir of St
Thomas Church in Leipzig used older boys to sing alto, and the composer must have had someone of great
ability in mind when he wrote a work of such beauty and complexity.
Aria: Vergniigte Run, beliebte Seelenlust (Happy rest, the soul's beloved joy)
Recit: Die Welt, das Siindenhaus (The world, the house of sin)
Aria: Wie jammem mich (How the errant hearts wail to me)
Recit: Wer sollte sich (Who should wish therefore to live here)
Aria: Mir ekelt, mehr zu leben (To live any more fills me with disgust)
Prelude and Fugue in E Minor, BWV 548
SUSAN KLOTZBACH, organ
