Scriabin belongs to the most ingenious and fascinating phenomena in music of the
early 20th century. It is astounding that for many years his bold works for piano
failed to be recognized as direct influences upon current music. After 1900 Scriabin
composed his most important works, intending to create a "mystery" which would
unite all the arts in a grand spiritual-artistic way, thus uplifting humanity above
itself into a condition of the utmost ecstasy. These two dances, written just before
his premature death reflect his vision of ethereal beauty contrasted with the
torments of evil and desolation.
