The Chariot Children Imant Raminsh (b. 1943)
The Chariot Children is a setting of a text by contemporary Canadian poet Cyril
Dabydeen for four-part treble voices and piano. Originally titled Caribbean Sun, the
poem captures the exuberance of the poet's childhood in the tropics, but the spirit of the
text has truly universal appeal, with such images as "we spin on wheels and race across
glory," and "we hold the sky at our fingertips."
The piano sets the scene with an energetic rhythmic figure that is picked up by the voices.
Flamboyance and joy characterize the first section. By contrast the second section is
stately. A third section represents darkness and mystery, out of which dawn returns. The
piece ends with a recapitulation of the opening idea.

I hear the mill wheel tique tique tacque. My father is having a house built. It's being
built with three gables. There are three carpenters building it. The youngest is my
darling. What do you have in your apron? It's a pie made of three pigeons. Let's sit
down and eat it. While sitting down they all lept up, causing the sea and fish to tremble,
and the stones on the bottom of the sea.
