VADEMECUM
"Vademecum was written between October 2007 and May 2008. It was
commissioned by the Metropole Brass Band and dedicated to infamous Geert
De Vos, the Principle Bass Trombonist of the National Opera " La Monnaie3
in Brussels (Belgium), the brass ensemble, Belgian Brass, and the trombone
quartet, Bone Project The concerto is an ode to three distinct facets of the
bass trombone: its dark, harsh and aggressive character - its lyrical, melodious
and romantic nature - and its playful, virtuoso abilities.' School life' describes
the composers struggle with different aspects of the education system, ending
with his decision to quit school and allow life to be his guide.'Love Life' is an
ode to Geert and his wife Katrien. It also shows the energy between a man
and a woman when love has just begun and how the outside world reacts to
it; some have joy and some have questions, while love prevails in the end.
'Cafe Life' captures the atmosphere of a typical Thursday night among
students - the pandemonium of a crowded cafe, having fun, while two
braggarts disturb the good ambiance and are put in their place by the soloist,
the DJ puts on jazzy music, while the number of drunkards increase. Finally
the rally of excitement after the patron's last call, up to the moment when he
can finally send everybody out and slams the door of his pub shut.."
