OH. NEVER SING TO ME AGAIN
Oh, never sing to me again is another transcription of a Rachmaninoff art
song by Thomas Hooten. The English translation of the lyrics by the
famous Russian poet Alexander Pushkin:
Oh, never sing to me again
The songs of Georgia, fair maiden,
Their tones recall to me in vain
Far distant shores with sorrow laden.
Alas! Those songs remembrance stir,
Full many mem'ries round me gather,
The steppes at night, in vision clear
The form and features of another!..
This image, fatal yet so true
At sight, of thee will surely vanish,
But at thy voice to rise anew,
That all my striving fails to banish.
So never sing to me again
Those songs of Georgia fair maiden,
Their tones recall to me in vain,
Far distant shores with sorrow laden.
There are a couple of recitative moments in the solo voice, where the
performer can take liberties. In fact, after the piano accompaniment
opens with the sweet, but sad sounding melody, the solo voice opens
with one of these moments making a statement. That voice is forcefully
proclaiming the maiden to stop singing. Then continues to explain how
the singing reminds the solo voice of a beautiful past he no longer has.
RONDO IN C MAJOR
Rondo in C Major was written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, and
arranged for trumpet or cornet quartet by Clair W. Johnson. Although
the piece was originally for violin and orchestra, Johnson makes use of
all four trumpets by exchanging and sometimes doubling the melody
between the parts, harmonizing with each other. The style is very
classical, as you would expect, with light articulations, very little
dissonances, and in the standard rondo form.
