SERENADE FOR CELLO AND PIANO
Mainly known for his symphonic works, his connection to the
ever popular group of nationalistic composers known as the
"Russian Five" and widely recognized publication Principles of
Orchestration, Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov left behind an impressive
reputation in the musical world. After dedicating many years to a
naval career, Nikolai joined the St. Petersburg Conservatory
where he was appointed professor of composition and
orchestration. He would there go on to teach composers such as
Prokofiev, Glazunov and Stravinsky.
His Serenade for cello and piano was written during a summer
stay in Yalta, Ukraine and later completed after his return to St.
Petersburg in late August of 1893. The piece is light and draws
from both Russian folk music and Yalta's close proximity to the
Black Sea to create a lively short piece that makes Serenade a
treasure in Rimsky Korsakov's repertoire that has sadly for too
long gone overlooked.
