past and present students from the Florida State University. Dr. Phillips
is a founding member and principal flute of the New Score Chamber
Orchestra (Orlando) and regularly performs with the Tallahassee
Symphony Orchestra and the Southern Winds professional wind band.
Dr. Phillips previously served on the music faculties at Carl Sandburg
College, Western Illinois University, and the Florida State University,
teaching various courses including applied flute, music appreciation, and
performing with faculty ensembles.
STETSON UNIVERSITY
MICHAEL RICKMAN
Steinway artist Dr. Michael Rickman joined the faculty at the Stetson
University School of Music in 1983 and last year celebrated 30 years at
Stetson. A highly sought-after performer and teacher, Dr. Rickman's
appearances have taken him to significant cultural centers around the
world. Of a performance in Freiburg, the Badische Zeitung wrote,
"Michael Rickman, brilliant at the keyboard, played not as a technician,
but as a musician, who lived the performance with both body and soul."
At Stetson, he maintains a studio of prize-winning students, preparing
them for musical studies in noted graduate programs, competitions, and
positions in the professional musical world. In 1990, Dr. Rickman was
the first recipient of Stetson University's Homer and Dolly Hand Award
for Creative Activity and Research, and he was honored to receive it
again in 2013. In 1995, he received the highest award given by Stetson
University to faculty, the William Hugh McEniry Award for Excellence in
Teaching.
JEAN OHLSSON WEST
Dr. Jean Ohlsson West, Professor of Music, served as Dean of the
School of Music from 2007-2013. Her association with Stetson began in
1985 when she founded the Stetson Community School of Music, which
she directed until 1992. Since then, Dr. West has been actively involved
in the Florida Flute Association, twice serving as FFA president and
board chair. She is a frequent soloist, chamber musician and orchestral
player, has performed at conventions of the National Flute Association,
and has served as audition and competition adjudicator. Dr. West holds
degrees from James Madison University and The Ohio State University.
She has taught at California State University Sacramento and Heidelberg
College (OH), and has been principal flutist with the Baton Rouge
Symphony and Opera Orchestra.
