James Forger premiered John Anthony Lennon's Distances Within Me
on June 28, 1979 at the VI World Saxophone Congress. The piece
contains a wide range of emotions that are achieved through nearly
inaudible pianissimos to startling, unison fortes. The composition
leaves room for the performer to use his own unique
interpretations, which makes the composition very personal and
introspective. The piece instructs the performer to play with very
evocative emotions like violently, romantico, suspended, flowing, madly,
and distantly. Lennon also creates great rhythmic complexity by
composing sections with both strict rhythmic pulsations and total
suspension of time. The first copy of Distances Within Me contained
no barlines at all. The composition reflects a wide range of emotions
and is meant to sound more instinctive and improvisational.
Concertino da Camera
Parisian composer Jacques Ibert was a highly successful graduate of
the Paris conservatory and a winner of the Prix de Rome. He
contributed to musical life by sitting on professional committees and
conducting his own works both in France and abroad. Although Ibert
composed songs as part of operatic, theatrical, cinematic, and radio
works, he was equally adept at writing solo works and orchestral
pieces. Ibert is remembered for a relatively small number of
compositions, which includes his concerto for saxophone.
Jacques Ibert's Concertino da Camera was written in 1935 for the
German-American saxophonist Sigurd Rascher and is recognized as
an essential part of the classical saxophone repertoire. The first
movement of the piece is written in ABA ternary form that contrasts
a lively jazz theme with a lyrical second theme. The second
movement begins with a solo recitative for the saxophone and the
piece takes on a somber atmosphere when the piano enters. The
piece then transitions into the lively finale that drives towards the
virtuosic ending.
