John Dowland (1563 - February 20, 1626) is considered one of
the most influential lutenists and composers of the English
Renaissance. The master of the unrequited love song, Dowland
composed 87 lute songs which are characterized by their subtlty
and sensitivity. "Flow My Tears" and "Come Heavy Sleep" are
perhaps the most indicative of this sensitivity. Dowland's
compositional style was often influenced by dance forms at the
time such as the "galliard" and the "pavane." "Flow My Tears"
was based on his pavane Lachrimae. Both "Come Again" and
"Come Heavy Sleep" are typical strophic songs with each verse
sung to the same music. "Come Heavy Sleep" may be the most
"lachrymose" of all of Dowland's songs, ending with the line "O
come sweet sleep; come or I die forever: Come ere my last sleep
comes, or come never."

Nikita Koshkin, born in 1956, is a Russian guitarist and
composer best known for his use of extended techniques and
programmatic settings with jazz influenced rhythms and
harmonies. Koshkin began guitar at an early age and studied at
the Moscow College of Music. In 1980, Koshkin exploded onto
the classical guitar forefront with his suite The Prince's Toys.
Parade is tame in comparison to Koshkin's other works but does
include some of the jazz influenced rhythms and harmonies that
are such a large part of his compositional vernacular.
