Gott, der Herr, ist Sonn' und Schild', BWV 79
Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)
Chorus: God, the Lord, is sun and shield.
The Lord gives mercy and glory.
No good thing will he withhold from rhe tighteous.
Aria: God is still our sun and shield!
He is rhe hope of our salvation, we give him thanks
and adorarion, that he guards his flock so well.
He it is who protects and keeps us when our enemy
seeks to slay us, and when the hounds of hell bark.
Chorale: Now thank we all our God, with hearts and hands
and voices. In all his wondrous works forever man rejoices.
Who from our mother's arms his bounty he bestows,
From Childhood on through life his countless blessings flow.
Recitative: Praise God! We know now the certain road to blessedness;
You, Jesus, have revealed you word to us, so may your name
be evermore praised and yer, rhere are still a few who are
stumbling in blindness. Ah, Lord, have piry now on these unguided ones!
Let them discover the righteous way and lead them as their Guide.
Duet: God, forsake thy faithful never more!
Let thy Word, upon us shining, guard us.
We implore thee, let our enemies no more attack us, so shall
our mouths praise you.
Chorale: Uphold us in the true faith, Give everlasting freedom to praise you name. Amen.
