Wohl tauscht ihr Vogelein
Ye birds that change each year these scenes for some warmer climes, tis not alone the
cold which bids you southward, but love. And there far from snow and rain you woo
your mates again, where skies shine bright and rare flowers make you glad. Then when
that spring is over, then Northward you speed once more to greet returning Spring, and
thus you make a year of Spring.
Vergiss mein nicht
Forget me not when other joys are near you, when love and grief your youth do crown,
when faithless friends betray you and ruthless care has cast you down. When love and
pleasure is over, then remember me and my love. Do not forget me when life is my over,
but remember the one whose every thought was yours. Remember me in love, in life, in
death. I am your faithful lover, though parted, my soul will seek your resting spot and
whisper, forget me not.
Wiegenlied
Rest now, my pretty one. Gently the evening ends; birds rest, the moon shines pale and
gently your eyelids close. Mother will watch you. Sleep my sweet and God will bless
you. Night is here and nothing stirs about, except in the maid's chamber. What sound
is that? Sleep my little prince. Who is more fortunate than you? You know nothing but
rest and pleasure. Everything is taken care of so that my little prince won't fret. And
will that so remain? Sleep, my little prince, sleep.
Das Veilchen
A small and hearty violet grew in the meadow. There came a young careless shepherdess
singing gaily: "Oh if only I were a violet and my lover would pick me and press me to his
breast. If only for a quarter hour." Alas the careless maiden trod the poor violet. The
violet withered and died, saying "If I must die then through her feet." The poor violet, it
was so hearty.
