VIRGIL MOOREFIELD, INTERMEDIA PERFORMANCE

"Visual Music: Precedents, Ideas, Practice"
Beginning with Kandinsky, artists and musicians have been interested in
correlations between visuals and sound. With the advent of motion pictures and
sound, pioneering artist-inventors such as Oskar Fischinger (Fantasia), Len Ley,
and later James Whitney (2001) conducted extensive experiments with creating
visual music. With the recent advent of fast personal computing, exploring
synesthesia is within everyone's grasp; indeed, it is one of the artistic imperatives
of the digital age.
This lecture/demonstration will explore new ideas about image/sound
relationships in the context of contemporary new media performance, including
computer examples by the author presented in real time.
