SCHOOL OF MUSIC
GUEST RECITAL
CURTIS BAHN, COMPUTER-EXTENDED SITAR AND DILRUBA
Featuring Pandit Nandkishor Muley, voice and tabla
Sponsored by Artists and Lecturers Series
October 7, 2008 7:30 P.M. Elizabeth Hall
The program this evening will consist of a number of improvisations and cross-cultural
collaborations between Curtis Bahn and Pandit Nandkishor Muley. The tonal aspects of
the music will be based loosely in the concepts and structures of Indian Raga combined
with electronic textures drawn for the most part from the natural sounds of the
instruments being played. Bahn's instruments are equipped with a variety of touch and
motion sensors which give the computer information about how he is touching and
holding the instruments; the angle of the sitar, the dilruba bow, how his hands are moving
while playing etc. The sensor data is combined with computer analysis of pitch and
other aspects of the acoustic performance to drive various qualities of the music in
performance.
It is a great honor to be joined this evening by Pandit Nandkishor Muley. It will be a
great treat to witness a master of Indian classical music participating so enthusiastically
in such wide-ranging musical experimentation.
Out of courtesy to the performers, it is requested that cameras
and recording equipment not be operated during the performance.
Please turn off all cellular phones, beepers, and other electronic devices.
