The fact is—the only thing that remains constant is change. That sentiment has never been more true than
it is today. We have seen more change in our lifetime than in any generation before us, but, the university,
anchored by its traditions and values, has prepared students for life in a changing world, for leading lives
of significance.
At Stetson facts are important—not just to us but to those who work here or attend the university.
Perhaps that's why US News & World Report ranks Stetson number three in the South in 2012 as well
as denoting Stetson as a best value in higher education. Or maybe that's why Forbes Magazine ranks
Stetson in the top 20 percent of undergraduate universities and U.S. News ranks the College of Law
number one in trial advocacy among all law schools.
There are plenty of facts in this booklet, but it is not just about "the facts." It is about gaining a sense of
possibility. It is about fulfilling potential. It is about leading a life of significance.
QUICKFACTS
Stetson boasts 2,300 undergraduate and 1,600 graduate
students. Our undergraduate students come from Jd states
and Ji countries. The university has j/J total faculty and
of those 03/o hold the highest academic degree in their
field of study, lou professors are located on the DeLand
campus. That adds up to a 1IL9'A1 student-faculty ratio.
Stetson supports 10 Division I athletics teams and is a
member of the Atlantic Sun Conference and the Pioneer
Football League. There are over 100 clubs, groups and
organizations on campus. About oO/o of students receive
financial assistance. Put it all together and you can see
why Stetson is recognized by USNews, Washington
Monthly, Parade Magazine, among others.

ALOOKBACK
New York entrepreneur Henry A. DeLand, who
played a leading role in establishing the city
of DeLand in 1876, founded the university as
DeLand Academy. Thirteen students started
classes in a rented building in 1883. The
following year, Mr. DeLand erected a building
at the corner of Woodland Boulevard and
Minnesota Avenue to house classrooms and
administrative offices. That building, now
known as DeLand Hall, is the oldest building
in Florida to be used continuously for higher
education.
After experiencing financial difficulties in the
late 1880s, Mr. DeLand found it impossible
to support the university. He turned to
Philadelphia hat-maker John Batterson
Stetson, who had recently built a winter home
in DeLand. Mr. Stetson provided much needed
funding for the new institution and in 1887,
John B. Stetson was elected to the university's
Board of Trustees. In 1889, the institution was
renamed in his honor.
